I like learning with my friends using the internet and computers. The useful life of information is shrinking, and yesterday’s knowledge may quickly become inconsequential. Students growing up in a “gamer’s” world are accustomed to advancing their skills by trial and error. They don’t find value in accumulating facts; they value experience. Again, this starkly contrasts with the traditional academic penchant for “high stakes,” one-time examinations. Learners like to feel they have some options— a traditional research paper, for example, could be replaced by a video presentation or Webpage submission if a student prefers another medium.
